Luxury new housing development – for swifts!

It was an unusual start to Sunday morning when the crew from Cottenham Fire Station came to the Recreation Ground to help with a biodiversity project providing new summer accommodation for swifts!

As part of the Village Hall project we were required to install a swift brick. This idea was taken one step further today with the installation of several swift boxes on the Hall and Pavilion, designed and built by Dick Newell from Action for Swifts. Each wooden box has a slot which the swifts can fly into to build their nests.

One large multi-occupancy box has been installed on the Pavilion above the clock. Attached is an electronic call attraction system which is used to encourage new arrivals to investigate and boxes and hopefully take up residency there. Three smaller boxes have bee installed on the front of the new Village Hall.

This project was made possible by a grant from CEAG. It is hoped that we will be able to install further boxes in the future.  We are extremely grateful to the fire crew for giving up their time today to get involved with this project.
