Queen’s Platinum Jubilee events

A full line up of events in Cottenham across the Jubilee weekend.

Thursday 2nd June – Jubilee Beacon from 7pm

Cottenham Recreation Ground

The Beacon will be lit on the evening of Thursday 2nd June and is one of thousands being lit in the UK and the Commonwealth, and forms part of the official programme announced by Buckingham Palace for the Jubilee Weekend. All official elements of the event will take place at the same time across UK.
The Cottenham Beacon will be lit by Ella McKenzie, a Queen’s Commonwealth Trust Young Leader, who runs the Sandy Hill Community Project Centre with her friend Sophie here in the village. At the centre they are dedicated to offer therapeutic activities with or without animals which are focused around supporting mental health and wellbeing for all ages. Some skills that are gained by therapeutic activities with animals include: building relationships with people and animals, trust, empathy, courage, team work, compromise and responsibility. Working with animals can illuminate ineffective habits and hidden strengths.
The Village Hall bar will be open from 7pm. We will have various food offerings available including The Biscuiterie Mobile Crêperie and Dessert Van and Cottenham favourite The Curry Palace. The Village Society will be hosting a Jubilee exhibition in the Hall over the weekend. Prior to the main programme The TyrannoChorus will be performing songs from our Balcony.
Official Programme:
  • 9.40pm – Cornet Player (Cottenham Brass) will officially announce the lighting of the beacon with a specially written bugle call entitled Majesty
  • 9.45 – Beacon lighting accompanied by TyrranoChorus singing Song for the Commonwealth, which has been specially written for the beacon events.
